the Missouri Pacific. The Jenks blue paint had been introduced in June 1961 and was rapidly covering the fleet. The decade of the 1950s had taught the railroad that diesels were not just steam locomotives without tenders and that they required a completely different approach to maintenance, utilization and economy. Most of the early \"oddball\" units were being retired, and in early 1962 the roster was being rationalized with a wholesale renumbering. And in January 1962 the MoPac began taking delivery of 100 factory low-nose GP18s. By the time I got a good look at the MoPac in the early 1960s, it had almost completely displaced the old Eagle blue and gray, and the units that I saw in the old scheme were invariably faded and weathered. The solid blue units, on the other hand, were usually clean and fresh. As one who grew up on Illinois Central black Geeps, the MoPac white chevrons and frame stripe and bright red \"vicious circle\" herald were just the right touch of color and class. The red herald did for the MoPac what the green diamond did for the IC. The similarities between the IC and MoPac were strong. They both liked the size and power of Geeps and both avoided \"fancy stuff' like dynamic brakes.
