Preface
The history of the Port Jervis & Monticello Railroad is the history of countless shortlines which had their beginnings in the great boom days of railroad building after the Civil War, and which with certain exceptions ran their courses, and either gave up the struggle or were absorbed by their more prosperous neighbors, the trunk line railroads. Many of the latter have in turn been threatened with extinction by the technological development of the modern age; the super-highway, natural gas and oil pipelines, and the airplane.
A railroad history must necessarily contain dry statistics, dates and facts. These have to be set down if the book is to be of any value as a reference of regional history. And whenever locomotives or rolling stock are mentioned, there is a breed of hobbyists known as the railfan, of which the author is a lifelong member, who expect a great amount of detail regarding them. I have attempted to blend the history and the life of this little railroad with information about its locomotives and cars, in a book to interest both the historian and the railfan.
It has been a labor of love to prepare this book and to publish it. As my old friend, the late Edward Hungerford, noted railroad historian, once said to me . . . "I never knew how much pleasure there was in writing a book about railroads until I wrote one", to which I would say to Ed if I could, . . ."Amen".
