Technically referred to by geologists as the Main Belt or Leadville-Boulder Belt, and more popularly known as the Front Range Mineral Belt, this region is a continuous mineral belt which runs from the proximity of the town of Boulder to Leadville. in a direction nearly due southwest-northeast, about 85 miles in length and 5 to 12 miles in width - passing directly through the Georgetown mining area.

The Mineral Belt covers areas in Boulder. The counties of Chaffee, Gunnison, Pitkin and Eagle are included in the total extent of what is known as the General Bell, as measured from Boulder to the area north of the town of Gunnison - in proximity to the ghost towns of Ruby and Irwin - a distance of 130 miles. This region also is known as the great Rocky Mountain Gold-and-Silver Belt, which includes the Aspen mining area. To the northeast of Aspen, a part of the belt passes through Lenado and into the Frying Pan district. Some distance northeast of the Frying Pan region is the Redcliff district, which is only slightly northwest of the main Leadville-Boulder Belt at Leadville. To the southwest of Aspen, the belt is traceable through Ashcroft and other mining localities across the Elk Mountain Range into Gunnison County. where it includes the Ruby, Irwin. Crystal and other neighboring mining districts. Also included is the area of a continuous north-south belt to the southeast, which embraces the 'lineup and Monarch districts. The belt which passes through Aspen - if considered to extend from the Frying Pan country to the Gunnison region - is about 45 miles long and 5 to 6 miles wide, and is a northeastward-trending mineral belt, slightly offset from the Main Belt. This area outside the Main Belt is included in the first two volumes along with the southern area of the Main Belt.

The first two volumes in The Mineral Belt series are subtitled Old South Park Railroads and present the most comprehensive word-and-picture story of the Denver, South Park and Pacific narrow-gauge system ever attempted. All of this material -at times provided by Randall's associates and members of his family - relates to the amazing history of The Mineral Belt. The Mineral Belt series presents the priceless records and writings of one of Colorado's extraordinary early-day newspapermen as a comprehensive history of the state's Front Range Mineral Belt. These wondrously revealing and colorful volumes cover the entire dramatic story of railroading and mining in this region - spanning over 100 years - to make this a truly outstanding pictorial documentary. Also included were scrapbooks containing clippings, photographs and related materials, and other of his writings, as well as the choicest part of his personal library of rare books and early maps. His daughter. Pearl Randall Sidney. kept much of this material stored away along with other priceless items saved by my mother. Preserved as it has been for many years, this material is an important treasure of Colorado history. It covers the exciting pioneer years of The Mineral Belt - as well as subsequent years, when the impact of the wealth flowing from its mines was being felt in Colorado and in the United States as a whole - the financial disaster of 1873, the demonetizing of silver in 1893, the closing of the mines, and the long wait for the revival of silver and mining as a whole. The story is presented from the viewpoint of Jesse Randall. as he actually lived it - from the time he arrived in The Mineral Belt and continuing throughout his career with The Georgetown Courier. It includes his many travels by railroad and other modes of transportation, the region's mining industry, the building of the railroads, the towns and mining camps, and the annals of the '59ers (narratives of their deeds and adventures, and observations thereof). Jesse's travels radiated from Georgetown, Colorado - then known as the Silver Queen of the Rockies - in the heart of The Mineral Belt. These journeys provide the main focal point for relating the stories about the many fascinating places in this region -both past and present. The news coverage of the day in part consisted of what was happening in the mining camps and told about the people, the mines and mining activities, the latest in new mill construction, mining methods and smelters, and personalities connected with the above. It also reported the building progress in the new towns and camps throughout the area, the transportation news, (such as the coming of the railroads), news of proposed new enterprises and progress reports on existing ones. Some detailed statements of production from the many mines and mining districts are included, along with new discoveries, and of course, items from Jesse's famous social column. This column kept everyone informed about everybody else's business, and along with obituaries, proved to be valuable historical information.

Jesse Randall's eyewitness reports presented in the Courier's columns and in other records are impressive - written in his precise, dignified. carefully planned and executed style. It should he pointed out that the newspaper was always delivered by mail, even in Georgetown, so it was necessary to get each issue to the post office by no later than Friday night of each week. As one reads Jesse's stories, his character takes on new dimensions, and you begin to understand what an extraordinary pioneer newspaper editor he really was, even under the great stress of having prominent people against him and his ideals.

Contents: Lay of the Land and its Geology -- The Arrival of Jesse Summers Randall -- The Magic of that Precious Metal --Gold -- Coming of the Iron Trail -- Denver Union Depot -- Denver to Webster -- Kenosha Pass to Granite -- The Leadville Mining District -- Condensed History of the DSP&P -- Scale Drawings of Equipment -- Index

416 pages -- Separate map City of Denver Detailed

All pictures are of the actual item. If this is a railroad item, this material is obsolete and no longer in use by the railroad. Please email with questions.
