Bibliography
Milwaukee Road Steam Power by John Tigges
Every railroad, with few exceptions, at one time had steam engines as their only source of motive power. From diminutive "tea kettles" to giants of the rails weighing in excess of a million pounds, railroads and their steam engines caught the romantic fancy of the world and held it for over a century. The steam locomotive has often been referred to as the most fascinating invention ever conceived by the mind of man.
The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad owned and created some of the most successful steam locomotives in the United States as well as in the world. From home-built engines to the famed Hiawatha locomotives, they plied the rails of this road that grew from its original 20-mile-long tracks to one of the largest railroad entities in the country that connected Chicago with the Pacific Coast by crossing two mountain ranges. Its 10,000 miles plus of track operated in 12 states and had trackage rights ultimately into two others.
In Milwaukee Road Steam Power, author John Tigges traces the story of those first "little tea kettles," to the sleek speedster Hiawatha engines and magnificent 4-8-4 Northerns, one of which has been recently rebuilt and runs today at the point of excursion trains.
