FOREWORD
Milwaukee Road entered the Second Generation with four-axle diesel locomotive operation with Electro-Motive Division's GP30 No. 340, which was placed in service during May 1963. Additional GP3Os were purchased from EMD during the next few years. As this Second Generation progressed, The Milwaukee Road also placed in service Electro-Motive Division's four-axle GP35s, GP40s, GP38-2s, and MP15ACs; plus General Electric's four-axle U25Bs, U28Bs, U3OBs, and U23Bs. All of these locomotives are covered extensively in this Volume Four-Milwaukee Road Locomotive Pictorial Series. Also included in this volume are Milwaukee Road's four-axle GP20s, rebuilt from retired GP9s.
Volume Five of this series, to be published in the near future, will cover the Second Generation six-axle Electro-Motive Division and General Electric locomotives which Milwaukee Road placed in service. Also covered in the fifth volume will be Milwaukee Road's rebuilt six-axle SD10s, the "Mother-Slug-Mother", and "Rotary Power Units" that were rebuilt from older diesel locomotives. The Appendix in Volume Five will also include an all-time inventory of Milwaukee Road freight and passenger diesel locomotives.
