The Milwaukee Road "G" Class 4-6-0 Locomotives
A very versatile and popular locomotive design, the 4-6-0 type steam locomotive has a 4-wheel pilot truck under the cylinders, and 6 driving wheels. They were always referred to as "10-wheelers" and were never given a proper name such as the 4-4-2 Atlantics, 4-6-2 Pacifies, 4-8-2 Mountain, 4-8-4 Northern, 2-8-2 Mikado, etc. under the Whyte International system of steam locomotive classification. In spite of not being formally named, they were produced in greater numbers, world wide, than any other steam locomotive design.
On the Milwaukee, the 4-6-0 type locomotives were given the "G" class designation. I don't know how they arrived at the "G" in 1901 when they assigned different letters to their different types of locomotives, but if they meant "G" to stand for Good or General, the locomotives fit into that category perfectly.
In diesel days, they would have been referred to as "Geeps", as the GP9 diesel locomotives that replaced them in 1954 and 1955 are called. The diesel locomotive "GP" stand for General Purpose, and they fill the bill nicely. Unlike the diesel GP9 that came in only one size, (55' 9" long, weighed 240,000 lbs and were 1750 horse power), the Milwaukee's steam Geeps came in a wide variety of sizes, weights and power ratings. They had been built by different manufacturers from 1881 to 1909. Over their many years of service, very few ofrebuilding and modification several times.
The 1927 plan book shows 547
"G" class and 26 "B" class 4-6-0 locomotives. At that time, the Milwaukee was operating 1,779 locomotives plus 70 leased to the Chicago, Terra Haute and Southeastern (a Milwaukee leased railroad). There were only 181 G-class locomotives renumbered in 1938. By then most of the older and smaller G2, G3, G4 and G5's had been retired.
