GENERAL
This pamphlet has been prepared to meet the demand for data concerning the first construction and later development of the lines composing the present Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad, known as The Milwaukee Road.
In order to keep this record within a small number of pages and thus permit wider distribution, it has been found necessary to omit biographical material and detailed reference to the scores of predecessor companies that since 1850 have been organized to construct lines that are part of the present system.
The map preceding the text for each state shows the year in which each section of track was completed. There are also included herein photographs and other items which it is believed will make this pamphlet more interesting.
Description of transportation conditions prior to the advent of the railroads has been confined to the text about Wisconsin. In 1850 there were only about 100 miles of railroad in the vast territory between the Great Lakes and the lower Mississippi River on the East and the Pacific Ocean on the West and therefore the same transportation conditions existed throughout the West except that Wisconsin had the benefit of the Lakes and more navigable streams than were available further in the interior.
In the 89 years since its first rails were laid The Milwaukee Road has grown to a system operating over 10,942 miles of road in twelve states with 1,208 miles of additional main tracks and 4,166 miles of yard tracks and sidings, a total of 16,316 miles of tracks of all kinds.
The population of the states traversed by its rails numbered 31,000,000 in 1930 and it served the residents of about 45% of the cities and villages on railroad lines in these states, including for Michigan the communities on the Upper Peninsula only.
