These were the years of the famous Hiawathas, headlined by those Chicago-Twin Cities speedsters pulled, in turn, by streamlined Class A 4-4-2's, a handful of 4-6-4's, the 15 (a pair of Electro-Motive E6A's), and finally by E9's and FP's. These were the days of \"Reduce to 90 for the curve at Ranney\" and \"Do not exceed 100 mph over the EJ\u0026amp;E crossing at Rond-out\". These were the times when 75 minutes for the 85 miles from Milwaukee to Chicago's Union Station was the standard day in and day out performance (actual running time sometimes was less). But even Skytop Lounges in 1948 and Super Domes in 1952 could not stem the onslaught of Chevys, Interstates, and 707's after 1960. For the fan, the Milwaukee also offered F's, FM's and electrification. In 1950 twelve streamlined electrics came West to aid World War I-era box cabs. Fan interest mounted, especially when the future of the wires became doubtful. In the Midwest, ranks of \"covered wagons\" from EMD and the drum of opposed pistons from Beloit lasted from the 1940's until the federally-imposed embargo in 1980. These battle-scarred veterans outlived similar machines on virtually every other road. But it seems that most everywhere the MILW went in the Midwest they found the North Western, and often the Burlington and the Rock Island too. Out West, Northern Pacific (later BN) rails always seemed to be next to the Milwaukee's tracks or just across the river on the other bank. In the long run this was too much for the nation's last transcontinental. The maroon and orange Hiawatha years were replaced by orange and black diesels and finally by an overflow of red ink. This then is a financially troubled Milwaukee Road which marks 130 years of service in November 1980.
