Much of their story is told through the eyes of railroaders and it is framed in terms of the times during which they existed. The electrics were a rugged and unique form of motivepower, fueled through copper wires instead of coal or oil. No pillar of smoke to mark their path, no cinders and soot in their wake. They bested steam in every area of service and outlasted many diesels. Then in 1974, the clock struck twelve and time ran out. The electrification had become old and worn, the company was dying, and management held little sentiment for legends: those magnificent motors and the wires soon faded from sight. In 1980, the tracks to the west were abandoned and everything was gone but the memories. The memories, though, will live in the hearts of the railroaders who proudly held the electrics to be the best locomotives the Milwaukee Road ever owned.
