DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
The Midland & South Western Junction Railway by T. B. Sands
The Midland & South Western Junction Railway formed a picturesque cross-country link between two of the large railway companies but was a wholly independent concern which worked its line with a stud of fascinating and attractive engines and competed vigorously for through traffic against a formidable rival-the Great Western Railway. After early years of poverty and failure it reached a peak of outstanding enterprise and efficiency and became a line of vital strategic importance in time of war, affording a direct route from the north to Southampton.
Mr. Sands brings the story up to date by recounting how the M. & S.W. route fared after it had passed into the hands of the G.W.R. in 1923 and thence into public ownership in 1948.
