Railroads Over Time begins a new series for Depot Square Publishing. Vintage photographs and contemporary color will be used to illustrate the evolution of a selected railroad from the golden age of steam to the modern age of streamlined diesels and electrics. Where our Scenes Along The Rails portrays what once was, Railroads Over Time takes the story full circle.
Having just celebrated its twentieth anniversary in 2003, Metro-North Railroad is well-suited to initiate the series. Though young in years, M-N operates over ancient ground. It descends from the Hudson River Rail Road (chartered in 1846) and is related to Cornelius Vanderbilt's New York Central & Hudson River Railroad and the omnipresent New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. Recent talks may add another branch to the family tree as Metro-North considers a merger with the Long Island Rail Road.
There is more to a successful commuter system than managing current demands-it must also anticipate future needs. Nearly everywhere one looks today, M-N is busily pursuing improvement. Its fleet of Genesis engines combined with the arrival of the next-generation M-7 electric MU cars, assures Metro-North's position as a leader in passenger railroads. New equipment takes priority, as commuters continue to travel from ever-distant locations into the Cradle of American Business that is New York City
