DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
The Metrorail system began to take shape on February 20, 1967 with the passage into law of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Compact. The Authority's purpose is to plan, develop, finance and operate improved transit facilities as part of a balanced regional system of transportation in the Nation's Capital.
On December 9, 1969 the Authority broke ground at Judiciary Square in the District of Columbia and began construction of the Metro system, one of the largest single public works projects ever undertaken. On March 27, 1976 the first trains were placed into passenger service on the Red Line between Rhode Island Avenue and Farragut North, and on January 13, 2001 construction of the original system was completed with the opening of the last five stations on the southern end of the Green Line in Prince George's County, Maryland.
This book is a story of the pioneers and visionaries of public transportation in Washington, DC. It's a story of dramatic setbacks in planning and financing that, at times, left the vision in doubt. And most of all it's a story of extraordinary commitment by Board members, executive staff and thousands of employees who have dedicated themselves to making the dream of rail rapid transit in Washington come alive.
The residents of Washington, D.C. and its suburbs are rightfully proud of their system, which has been called "America's Subway." Many of the area's long time residents remember the days when streetcars were king in Washington. hey recall the end of streetcar service in 1961, followed by the financial failure of the privately-operated bus system about 12 years later. Those were times of doubt and concern for the future of Washington, as suburban shopping malls and offices attracted economic activity away from downtown. In spite of the trends, however, the transit pioneers continued to believe in their goal of building a world class rapid transit system in the Nation's Capital.
Even though the 103-mile Adopted Regional System is now complete, Metro's pioneering work is far from done. Metro's leaders remain dedicated to fostering redevelopment downtown as well as to serving the growing suburbs and new towns of the area.
At 25 years of age, Metro has grown and matured into a seasoned operation. It has become an indispensable part of the fabric of everyday life in the Washington area. This book commemorates 25 years of superior service by celebrating the past and by looking forward to building the future. The book is dedicated to those who conceived the Metro system, to those who built it, to those who run it and keep it running, and to the millions of loyal customers who have made it a success over the past 25 years.
