MEMORIES OF THE LAKES is history differently written. This work is more in the nature of a scrap book of past outstanding incidents of the Great Lakes, compiled in an interesting manner. All are true, and the dates and stories accurate. Many are from personal interviews.
The author delighted Great Lakes enthusiasts in 1940 with his first book, LORE OF THE LAKES, which was instantly accepted and is still in demand. His readers requested more from his pen on the same subject. MEMORIES OF THE LAKES is offered to meet this demand.
As in his previous book, Mr. Bowen has developed a large and interesting Pictorial Section. Shown in carefully selected pictures are famous old Great Lakes ships, from the early schooners to the palatial sidewheel passenger steamers of recent years-all of them now memories.
Lovers of both ships and books will find MEMORIES OF THE LAKES much to their liking. It should also be considered a handy reference book on the bygone days of the Great Lakes. Nearly five hundred ships are mentioned in the book, each accurately placed.
PREFACE
The complete history of the Great Lakes will, of course, never be told. Many volumes have been written and many more may be forthcoming, but all the detailed history of these great bodies of fresh water can never be recorded. Every mile of shore line has its own story, as has every ship. Many men and ships have long since passed from the beautiful shores of these lakes and their valiant stories are buried with them.
Today we can only retell those tales that have been handed down to us by letter and word. A few men still live who can talk first hand of actual experiences aboard the bygone windjammers of the lakes, and of those early struggles of the creaking wooden steamers to gain a foothold in the realm of commercial transportation.
It has been the author's pleasure to search out many of these old sailors and to listen to their adventures. Every available old book and record pertaining to the subject has been carefully studied. The maze of material is astounding from which to make the selections of the most interesting stories. The years gone by have piled up wondrous tales, and herein is a modest attempt to retell only a few of them. That they may be as fascinating to the reader as they were to the author is the purpose of this book.
