About the book...
MEMORIES OF NEW YORK CENTRAL STEAM is meant to be an all time photo/factual remembrance of the Central's iron steeds. Particular attention is paid to the most modern of this power- the Hudsons, Mohawks and Niagaras. We come to appreciate the perfection of planning that went into these, the finest steam locomotives to ever work on the NYC System. We have also included a System map, twelve pages of locomotive specifications plus a copious Commentary with cross references. This 352 page book is an indepth study of NYC steam.
On the cover...
Our cover illustration shows Niagara 6022 heading up a heavy express train on the western part of the Central where such a train was expected to maintain a schedule calling for speeds in excess of 100 mph. This pencil drawing is the work of Alfred Krause of Berlin, Germany. Mr. Krause has rendered steam locomotives from all over the world for enthusiasts and is particularly endeared to the steam power in the United States. The cover also contains a broadside view of 999, the famous 4-4-0 speedster.
About the author...
Arnold Haas has been intensely interested in steam locomotives just about all of his life. This interest knows no national boundaries, in fact, our author was born and raised in Germany and was first attracted by the many speedy iron horses there. Upon coming to the United States many years ago, the steam power of North America and especially that of the New York Central caught our author's attention. Although this is Arnold's first book in the English language he has had published in German. Besides this, the author has had published in the German magazine LOK a great many feature articles about North American steam power.
