DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
One of America's most unusual logging and railroad operations began in the late 1800s and continued until recent years in the rugged, beautiful High Sierra country north of Sacramento in an area near Chico. The Diamond Match Co. used not only standard-gauge but also narrow-gauge lines to reach secluded forest preserves.
This volume, with a text supplemented by rare photos, maps, and other illustrations, tells that fascinating story of logging eventually blended with a pioneering environmental program designed to protect the Sierra.
The country is rugged, distinguished by steep mountains and deep valleys. Each year the tracks went deeper into the lush forest in the search for timber. Before the rails, flumes of unusual and spectacular design also were used to carry lumber from the mills to the valley areas. The mighty operation at one time even included a cable incline to move timber over rugged terrain.
While Diamond has been famous for its matches (and indeed, a match factory was an important part of the California operation), much of the timber went to build the stately homes of San Francisco. It also went to yards which provided lumber for many uses.
Part of the project became the Butte County Railroad, which carried not only timber but passengers to Chico. This line was consolidated into the Southern Pacific and operated until 1974.
Matches, Flumes, and Rails is a handsome volume which fills a variety of interests: the rail fan, history buff, environmentalist, model builder, and aficionado of the High Sierra.
In text and photos, the book tells how the railroad was built and how geared locomotives struggled to carry timber over steep grades. It also recalls how trainmen risked their lives trying to control runaways, the glory of the "fun" days of long ago when the railroad carried happy excursionists, and explains how the line became a legend among Sierra buffs and rail fans.
