Although the Manx Northern Railway was but I6 'h miles long wi.h an independent life of a quarter of a century, its story is full of interest, and is told in full for the first time. The discovery of long-lost records has permitted a remarkable portrait of a small company striving against all the odds. Often we learn not only what was done and the reasons given, but the aspirations of board, officers and men. The extra-ordinary
relationships between the MNR, IOMR, Foxdale Railway, Manx and UK governments are explained using information never before made public.
As well as casting vivid new light on Manx railway and political life, detailed appendices and numerous drawings will fascinate the railway lover and modeller alike. A lighter note is struck by the many anecdotes from MNR days, including such gems as the curate who jogged in the three foot, and so delayed a train! Amusing though such incidents are, they go towards the more important role of creating a uniquely detailed portrait of everyday life on a narrow gauge railway in Victorian times. Those interested in narrow gauge railways and the historical scene, modellers, students of Manx life and social and economic history will all find much of interest.
The text is supported by some 80 illustrations and over 25 pages of drawings and documents, including rare Foxdale Railway, Peel Railway and Poortown & Glen Helen Railway items.
