Within a decade after the mainline railroads of the United States and Canada had replaced the last of their steam locomotives with diesel power in 1960, virtually the only working iron horses were employed by short tourist railways. The despair of those who loved the old engines reached abysmal depths in the mid-sixties when it seemed that steam on the high iron - pulling heavy trains at high speeds - was indeed extinct. Their mourning proved premature, for although the "big show" of regular service steam was gone beyond all recall passenger excursion use was to stage a remarkable and spectacular comeback.
From just a half-dozen locomotives available for mainline service in mid-1966, over fifty others have since been resurrected from parks and museums. More have been refurbished to run on preserved lines and could easily go into mainline service. The past quarter-century has fled so quickly that a dozen big engines have been returned from oblivion, run for years and have since gone back into retirement! As the 1990s begin, there is no sign of let up in the steam locomotive restoration craze, with close to thirty more mainline standard-gauge engines being actively worked on. Add to these the score of former class-1 narrow-gauge locomotives that have been restored and the total approaches 120 - all of which are covered in Mainline Steam Revival.
