THE scene of my railroad apprenticeship-the Sierra Nevada of California-was the scene as well of two of the most dramatic incidents in the history of the Southern Pacific Company.
It was 1894 and I was the rawest of youngsters, not yet out of my teens, sent into the mountains as night telegrapher. Among the giants who warmed themselves occasionally at the agent's red-boweled stove were men who had shoveled snow during the disastrous blockade of 1890. There were others who had helped rebuild the Cascade station, torn in two by the runaway freight train which had gone into the canyon.
Their talk was strong. The fumes of it went to a boy's head.
There was much to be learned about snow in those days. During the winter months operation across the Sierra meant a perpetual battle.
