It is surprising how, in two succeeding centuries, the pattern of our main railway lines has changed vividly over similar 30 year periods. In the 19th Century the great age of railway expansion lay between the 1830s and 1860s; in the 20th Century the pendulum has swung the other way and steam, the life blood of the old days, is on its way out. In this book, Mr Whitehouse, well known for his other books of superb pictures, has set out to show the main lines of the British Isles and Eire between 1930 and 1964, and a quick flick through these pages will prove how well he has succeeded. In addition to his own pictures there are photographs by such well-known experts as Maurice Earley, Eric Treacey, No Peters, E. R. Wethersett, and many others, all of which provide not only a valuable record over the years, but a feast of shots which can only be described as the pick of the bunch. Wisely, Mr Whitehouse has decided to keep the quality of the pictures his main concern, but he has also included two short essays at the beginning of the book on railway photography and locomotive performance. These essays, which cover the same period as the photographs, are from the pens of two experts, Maurice Earley and Norman Harvey, and they provide that little bit o extra spice that makes this picture book a real collector's piece.
