A night-club owner in Montmartre is found strangled at the foot of a cemetery wall in Paris. Maigret is called in, and finds himself faced with a series of puzzles. The crime is not the usual Montmartre gangland murder. No gangster ever strangles-it's either the knife or the gun. More puzzling still: no gangster would ever hold on to a corpse for forty-eight hours, especially in hot summer weather, which is what happened in this case.
There is no lead. The dead man had no mistress, no family quarrels. He was a serious, hard-working man, devoted to his wife and children, keeping on the right side of the law, even paying his income tax with scrupulous honesty.
Maigret is thoroughly baffled. He pounds the pavement and racks his brain, reconstructing time and time again the events of the last night, the last telephone calls, the last walk of a man disappearing mysteriously into the night. When he finally traces the crime to its unlikely author, Maigret, virtually for the first time, loses his temper as he realizes that a remarkably cunning mind had built up an ingenious racket involving Maigret's personal reputation.
Among Simenon's "Maigrets," this is one of the most suspenseful. The solution is unforeseen, the twist of Maigret's personal involvement in the crime most deftly done.
