1 oday, from the far side of middle age, as if through a tele- j scope held backwards, we look at our younger selves.
It was the spring of 1958, and two boys, neighbors in the small New Jersey town of Oradell, planned for their upcoming trip to Montreal in different ways. The younger-he was 15-took the crisp ten-dollar bills that he received as an allowance and, rather than spending them on baseball cards or chocolate egg creams, stashed them in the front of his desk drawer, watching them accumulate until there were enough to cover his share of a double bedroom from New York to Montreal and back on the overnight Montrealer/Washingtonian, plus two nights in Montreal. Each week, when he slipped another bill on top of the tidy stack, he'd think about the substantial fleet of steam locomotives, both
Canadian Pacific and Canadian National, still in service in Montreal and how he and his friend from across the street would travel north to see and photograph them. The previous summer, on a trip to Europe, his parents had given him a Zeiss-Ikon 35-millimeter camera, so he was ready.
