Conceived at the end of the 19th century and running for nearly 20 miles through some of the finest North Devon countryside, it became a legend in its own short lifetime. By the 1920s road transport had begun to eat into the line's goods and passenger traffic, and as the receipts dwindled the standard of maintenance suffered. In 1923 it was purchased by the newly-formed Southern Railway, evidently as a public-spirited gesture. The new owners lavished money on it, even buying a new locomotive and eight goods vehicles, but the traffic continued to decline. It was the era of road improvements and the char-a-banc.
