INTRODUCTION.
THE compiler of this work, having for some time felt the want of a complete list of officers, and certain financial statements regarding the railroads in this country, and having seen a work of a similar character, published in the Spring of 1856, but not continued annually, has, by application to each and every railroad in this country and the Canadas, obtained the necessary information, in most cases officially, for the compilation of this work.
The roads marked (*) having neglected to give the information, I have given all the facts within my knowledge regarding them, and hope, in a future edition, to get the " official reports."
Returning my thanks for the promptness with which my requests to the companies have been met, I am,
Respectfully,
JAMES W. LOW, JR. NEW YORK, August, 1858.
