Foreword
The Louisville & Nashville Railroad Historical Society is proud to present this compilation of diagrams covering the NC&StL Ry's steam locomotive and diesels from 1930 to 1957, dynamometer car, cabooses, cranes and passenger equipment from approximately 1900 to 1957 The NC&StL was originally chartered as the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad in 1845, and in 1873, became known as the Nashville Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway. The railway eventually operated 1259 miles of railroad trackage in Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. The NC&StL was operated as a subsidiary of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad from 1880 until 1957, when the NC&StL N srged into the L&N Railroad Company.
As a part of the L&N corporate system, the NC&StL interchanged passenger and freight cars with the L&N. Yet, despite L&N own ip, the NC&StL maintained steam locomotive power of a distinctive nature, completely apart from its owner. The nature of the "NC' therefore a colorful one, and this booklet should prove interesting to model railroaders and researchers.
Permission to reprint this material was granted by CSX Transportation, and is available to historians due to the unceasing preservat orts of Mr. Charles B. Castner. Without his help, this information on one of the L&N's subsidiary lines would in all likelihood have bi t forever. The original material has been transferred by CSX to the University of Louisville's Belknap campus, Louisville, Kentucky, )reserved in the Archives and Records Center in the Ekstrom Library.
The Louisville & Nashville Railroad Historical Society was formed in 1982 to engage in the collection and preservation of informati on vestiges, artifacts and other items of historical and technical interest concerning the L&N Railroad, its predecessors and its successors. ;oing project is the research and publication of information concerning the L&N for educational purposes. The Society maintains ociation of persons interested in the L&N, and is incorporated in the State of Kentucky. The Society has applied for recognition as a r profit educational and historical society with the Internal Revenue Service.
The Society has taken efforts to reproduce all the diagram sheets in this booklet in the most legible form possible. However, in seve Lances, the original prints were soiled. Therefore, a perfect copy was not always obtainable. The motive power pages include a 1951 ros well as a steam locomotive disposition list. A word of warning is issued concerning the diesel diagram sheets: the NC&StL renumbe eral of their switchers, and all renumbering notes are on the left-hand side of the sheets.
The dynamometer car (numbered 90130), used to test locomotive performance, was acquired in 1917, and was later purchased by N. The data sheet for this piece of equipment, also found in the L&N Equipment Diagram Book, is included after the motive power listi The caboose sheets are from the L&N retired cars list, but are of NC&StL heritage. The crane diagrams show an interesting array of n and locomotive cranes and wreckers that served the railroad. The passenger car sheets cover equipment manufactured from 1902 ui 4. Two roster lists are included in this booklet, and many pages from each list duplicate one another. However, due to many roster changes and renumberings, all available pages are included for your study.
