The Louisville and Nashville Railroad is an institution of the South.
For over 90 years it has been a citizen of the 13 states into which its lines extend, and because of its aid in helping to develop the great natural resources of the territory it serves, its constructive policies, and its economical operation, it is regarded as one of the substantial railroads in the country.
Throughout its corporate existence the L. & N. has always been able to weather the financial storms, has not changed its corporate name, and is one of the few railroads in the country never in receivership. It has always met its obligations to the public, paid every dollar to its workers, its creditors and its stockholders, and with few exceptions has regularly declared dividends to its stockholders since 1864.
Its dependability has so long been a byword of the South that it is affectionately known for and wide as the "Old Reliable."
Thus, the L. & N.'s 90-odd years are so redolent with the history, tradition, romance and industrial progress of the people of the South and of its far-flung personnel, that it has long been felt an accurate chronicle of these events would be received with more than passing interest. That chronicle is now at hand.
Kincaid Herr, for many years an employe of the Magazine Department of the L. & N., has very effectively and entertainingly supplied an account of the inception and subsequent evolution of the L. & N. Railroad. He has been necessarily brief in his account-a complete history would require many volumes much larger than this one-but he has clothed the skeleton outline with much material of human interest. The history proper, as originally written for the L. & N. Magazine, and published in it serially, ended with the close of the year 1940. Since then much of moment has occurred and a supplementary chapter has now been added, telling of the L. & N.'s vital part in the war effort.
It is believed that all Old Reliable employees, and others, will find much of interest in the following pages.
