Lost Railroads of Western New York Volume 1 Lehigh Valley at Buffalo by Koenig
Lost Railroads of Western New York Volume 1 Lehigh Valley at Buffalo by Stephan M Koenig Soft Cover 2010 104 pages
This project has been in the works for some time. Almost immediately after the release of my first book, Trackside Around Buffalo by Morning Sun Publications, I set out to document what was still extant from the railroads we have lost here in Western New York. It was easy to see from personal observations, even as a youngster, that the Lehigh Valley was the hardest-hit of all railroads in this region. My father took me to Tuft Junction when I was 10 years old to see the rusted rails of what had been Lehigh Valley. The place was devoid of trains and on the verge of removal. But that single day gave birth to my interest in the LV. As years passed, other projects would take precedence, but something always brought me back to this once-proud rail system. More recently, as I watched the rights of way and various structures of the Lehigh vanish, an urgency to document them became more apparent. (On a side note, this first volume of a planned series is only intended to cover the Lehigh Valley in the immediate Buffalo area, as well as direct components that went into the railroad proper. Coverage of properties such as the Buffalo Creek Railroad, which the Lehigh Valley operated jointly with the Erie and its successors, are planned for later publications.)
This volume is intended as a reminder to what we have truly lost -- a reminder to those who loved the Lehigh Valley for what it was, and to those responsible for its demise. As time goes on, we will likely lose more of what once made the Buffalo area great. Similarly, this country will lose touch with more of its historic institutions -- like the Lehigh Valley -- that made it truly great. I hope, through the eyes of those who photographed the Lehigh, that we at least never lose the memories.
