In this work we have collected some of the stories of the legendary sites that will be buried forever beneath the reservoir that will be formed by the Oroville Dam. Perhaps this effort will stimulate others to mine the unworked bonanza of history which exists in the craggy canyons of the Feather.
Some of the terrain has remained unchanged since that day in 1820 when Captain Luis Arguello first stood on the banks of the river and named it The Rio de Las Plumas, because of the many feathers of wild pigeons that drifted with its current. Later the paths of such intrepid adventurers as Jedediah Smith, Jim Beckwourth, Peter Lassen, Michael La Frambois, General John C. Fremont and General John Bidwell led through portions of this magnificent land of plenty.
The complete story of California can never be fully told until the tales of the Feather have been recorded as they were actually lived.
Some day that work will be done. We can only hope that it will be completed within the lifetime of those who read this collection.
