The Steam Locomotive, once so common as to be taken for granted throughout the nation, has all but disappeared in the space of an impossibly short span of time. Almost overnight it seems, that awe-inspiring creation has been replaced for economic reasons by a far less fascinating internal combustion machine. Only on a few widely spaced short lines, on fan trips, and in photographs can one renew his friendship with the sights and sounds only steam can produce. But 90 mph 4-8-4's on first class passenger runs and articulateds or 2-10-4's on 100 car freights, as well as the unique flavor of branch line 2-8-0's and the inevitable 0-6-0 switching the yard leads, have been gone for more than five years at this writing. The author hopes that the accompanying photographs will serve to renew an affection for steam and this volume is dedicated to that end. As in the author's first book, the accent has been on quality during the preparation of this volume and every effort has been made to make the content and photo reproduction the very best.
