ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Like many of us that developed a fascination with the railroad, Bill Brennan began his interest as a youngster. Accompanied by his parents, he first became acquainted with railroads by riding the Central Railroad of New Jersey from his home in Jersey City to visit Manhattan. When he was ten years old, his family moved to North Arlington, NJ, which expanded his railroad horizons to include the Erie.
As his knowledge of the region's railroads increased, he traveled to Newark so he could observe operations the of the Pennsylvania Railroad, Delaware Lackawanna and Western and the Hudson and Manhattan rapid transit line. In 1956, Bill acquired a box camera allowing him to record the end of steam locomotive operations on the New York and Long Branch Railroad at South Amboy, NJ. During this period, Bill encouraged a young friend to accompany him on his railroad safaris: none other than Bob Yanosey, who would eventually become Founder and President of Morning Sun Books. With Bill's encouragement, Bob began taking photographs himself. A lifelong passion for railroads ensued, as did a lasting friendship. After graduating from high school, Bill attended Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ to advance his education. His interest in photography had become more sophisticated and he purchased a 35mm Bolsey camera. As Bill became increasingly skilled, he advanced to more versatile cameras which allowed him to take perfect photos under all lighting conditions. His preferred camera is the Nikon F model.
Upon graduating from Stevens with an engineering degree, Bill accepted a position with the New York State Public Utilities Commission in the electric and gas division. As a side benefit of this position, Bill did a lot of traveling in the New 'ark Metropolitan area investigating reports of safety conditions. All this wandering around permitted him to photograph a vast array of railroads and facilities in the state. Trips out to Long Island gave Bill an exposure to the Long Island Rail Road and its interesting operation of freight and passenger trains. While enjoying the photographs in this book, please take note of their professional and detailed composition.
