On Saturday 1st July 1933 the London Passenger Transport Board took over the ownership and operation of London's electric tramways, trolleybuses, under - ground railways and most of the motor bus services. Under the powers of the London Passenger Transport Act, the new Board assumed responsibility for all public transport (except the suburban services of the four main-line railways), in an area extending about twenty-five miles from Charing Cross in all directions.
The idea of a unified system of transport for London was not new. Indeed as long ago as 1863, a Select Committee of the House of Lords had reported on the desirability of unification, while the report of the Royal Commission on London Traffic, set up in 1905, favoured the formation of the London Traffic Board to have general control of public transport in the Metropolis.
