DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION:
THE LONDON & North Western Railway was fully entitled to style itself the Premier Line. It had the biggest locomotive fleet, the largest staff of any railway in Britain and the greatest mileage of quadruple track. At its zenith, its superbly turned-out trains were a magnificent sight to behold.
Financially, the LNWR remained the busiest carrier right up to the grouping, earning the highest net revenue of all British railway companies. Its paid-up capital was greater than any of its contemporaries, its position as the country's largest joint-stock undertaking remaining unchallenged.
Historically, the company had impeccable antecedents. It included the Liverpool & Manchester - the line on which railway technology underwent the transformation that made the creation of a new national transport system a practical possibility. George Stephenson's wayward genius also played a key role in the Premier Line's other trunk constituents and was suitably acknowledged by his statue which dominated Euston's cathedral-like Great Hall.
All in all, the LNWR remained the most significant component of the British railway system throughout its independent life. All the more remarkable therefore that - almost alone among the major pre-grouping companies - it has not hitherto been the subject of a comprehensive modern history. Malcolm Reed has at last remedied this deficiency with a work that skillfully intertwines and interprets the many facets of this vast undertaking. The product of over thirty years' research, it is that rare thing among railway histories: immensely factual and at the same time a good read.
