All these forms of traction passed into British Railways ownership albeit some for just a few days before they were withdrawn. However, the majority went on to give many years' service to the national concern and a number of them, as in the case of the Stanier Black 5s and 8F 2-8-0s for instance, survived to become the last standard gauge steam locomotives at work on BR.

The first section of the book lists each individual engine with its home shed named alongside. Classes are categorised into former pre-group companies as well as LMS built locomotives, giving the reader a chance to compare just what was left of the 10,000 plus locos of pre 1923 design inherited by the LMS. For simplicity, certain LMS built pre-group designed engines such as the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway 'Dreadnoughts', Caledonian Railway O-4-4T and 4-6-0 types, etc., have been listed with their pre 1923 counterparts.

Power classifications and wheel arrangements are used to group the engines into numerical lists. Obviously the locomotives listed were not all 'at home' on 31.12.47 but they were certainly allocated to the named depots. As an approximate breakdown of the whereabouts of the engines, 15% could be said to be at Main Works for overhaul or undergoing repair and maintenance at Main Sheds and of the 85% that were available, 55% would be in traffic on the system and the other 30% would be 'on shed'. Sub sheds are not listed, as locos would generally only spend a week or two at `subs', returning to their respective main or 'garage' shed for servicing/ wash out, etc. Another loco, usually of the same class or at least suitable for the work, would take its place. Certain sub sheds such as Blackpool North (Talbot Road) and Greenock Princes Pier were hardly small establishments and would sometimes have a sizeable allocation supplied by their respective main depots and changed on a regular basis, but these were exceptions to the rule. On the other hand, some of the coded sheds such as Highbridge, Oban, Penrith, etc., had no more than a handful of engines allocated, but still carried codes; 13E Upminster for much of 1947 had no engines allocated at all, although two or three tank engines of LTS or MR origin could be found stabled there on most days.

Of the pregroup types still extant in 1947, it will be noticed that the former Midland Railway contingent formed the bulk of the old timers. This of course not only reflects the Midland's entrenchment and belief in its own superiority but also the influence it had on the LMS hierarchy in the early days. Some pre-group companies such as the Maryport & Carlisle and the North Staffs were not represented by a single engine at the end of the LMS, the Glasgow & South Western Railway's only example was 16905, a 3F 0-6-2T dating from 1919. The Furness

Railway had six 0-6-0s still working, tucked away on former home territory in Cumbria. The Caledonian had 750 plus survivors at Nationalisation, largely as a result of the go-it-alone attitude of the Scottish area (Northern Division) of the LMS during the 1920s and '30s. Remnants of the Caley board did in Scotland what the former Midland influence did further south. Amongst the English companies, the Lancashire & Yorkshire and the London & North Western Railways were still well represented although the latter by only a few types, the bulk of which were 0-8-0s of the G classes. Of the LMS designs, all the steam locos passed into BR hands except two 2P 44-0s which were lost to accident, Sentinel 7192 withdrawn in 1943, and a number of 3F 0-6-0Ts which were either on loan to the War Department, lost while in WD service or, as in the case of 7456 and 7553 ending up in Ulster, regauged and working on the Northern Counties Committee system. Stanier 8F 2-8-0s have been well chronicled in other publications and it only needs the reader to be reminded that the gaps apparent in the numbering system were caused by many reasons; locos being on loan to the WD and other operators or lost while in WD service. In the case of 8705-8772, these engines were on loan to the LMS from the London & North Eastern Railway and 8759 had still to arrive from Doncaster, hence the gap.

The LMS were advocates of the diesel engine and recognised its application in shunting locomotives early on, the first examples appearing in the early 1930s. Several of the pioneer types failed to make it into Nationalisation, largely as a result of their being sold or loaned to the WD and other concerns. However, the die had been cast and the twin motor diesel electric shunters of the 7120-29 series went on to form the nucleus of what later became the huge BR class 08 diesel shunter fleet.

The engine sheds themselves have been fully catalogued in the Wild Swan publication series on LMS Engine Sheds by Chris Hawkins and George Reeve and only a few appear here in photographic form to lend some atmosphere to the subject.

The locomotive photographs reproduced in the book were in the main taken in the period 1946-52 and are representative of the time when locomotives were rarely clean and maintenance standards were at a low ebb due, in part, to post war shortages of both staff and materials; these factors affected not only the railways but the rest of British industry too.
