DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION The untold story of the hundreds of shortlines and logging railroads that crisscrossed South Carolina 175 photographs Eighty-two illustrations
Within these pages lies the untold story of the independent and commercial loggers that crisscrossed the state and carved a niche into South Carolina's history.
South Carolina was much like other southeastern states at the time: low-lying estuarial lands bounded on the ocean by sea islands, and inland, by great-spreading swamp areas.
This topography hindered commercial trade. Merchants realized that a railroad network could link all centers of commerce, thereby increasing commercial trade. Loggers noticed the efficiency and economics of a railroad, too, and began building their own lines from the main line railroads deep into the forests and swamps.
The forests and swamps posed other problems. Swamps infested with malaria-carrying mosquitoes threatened the lives of not only the loggers, but their family and friends. In the swamps, railroad crews often had to battle ferocious alligators that spread their enormous bodies on the tracks. And, if the loggers and their families were unprepared for winter, it could prove fatal.
For the past 10 years, author Tom Fetters has unearthed a wealth of information on South Carolina's railroading and logging histories. Fourteen exciting chapters packed with several hundred unique photographs and illustrations retell the story of the loggers' labor and determination that built this land.
Relive a time when the forests and swamps bulged with the "green gold" waiting for only the determined and innovative to be contenders. Many took the challenge, and the story of the champions is found within these pages.
