PREFACE
At the time of this writing, Boise Payette Lumber is thirty years gone. Since 1957 its identity has been laminated beneath that of its successor, the Boise Cascade Corporation. The offspring and progenitor bear little resemblance; technology, stock circulation, and corporate law have obliterated the familial line that was once a frontier outpost of Weyerhaeuser's Pacific dominion.
In its prime, the Boise Payette was the big mills, big stumpage, big company towns, big camps and railroad empire that typified the Weyerhaeuser name. It operated its own common carrier. And, in addition, it fostered two more and dominated yet a fourth. These railroads, the Boise Payette's logging lines, and that of competitor Hallack and Howard Lumber, embody the whole of logging railroad history in Southern Idaho.
This book is the chronical of these railroads, principally focused upon the Boise Payette's common carrier, The Intermountain Railway Company; as adjunct in law and form to the Intermountain, the book also covers the little known oddity, the Boise and Arrowrock Railroad-the first common carrier railroad owned and operated by the Federal Government.
But railroads are the products of proffer. They are what they carry; nothing more, nothing less. In developing this book, it was necessary to go beyond the Boise Payette's tracks into the mills, stumpage, camps, towns and politics of lumber that shaped the single proffer-sawlogs-that shaped the railroads in turn. So evolved an industrial history, that of the Boise Payette as the secondary theme. And the secondary is slight by no means. For like its railroad apotheosis, the Boise Payette is the whole of large-scale logging history in Southern Idaho.
In spite of its title, then, this work is in fact three histories: the railroads; the logging; and a regional saga in the congeries of companies called Weyerhaeuser.
