LESS than four years is not a long time for a railroad to exist. The Seaboard System was born from the Family Lines confederation of roads on January 1, 1983 and then merged with CSX Corporation's Chessie System on July 1, 1986 to become the rail arm of a multi-mode transportation conglomerate.
Four years, however, is just the tip of this rail iceberg, or, better said, the icing on a cake that goes back to the golden railroad age with its Atlantic Coast Lines and Louisville & Nash-vines and so on. Looking over such a rail picture in the light of the merger developments of the 1980's shows the subject from a new perspective.
Our work is mainly locomotive oriented in nature with the emphasis on pictures to tell the story. We first travel back to get an idea of what roads like the Clinchfield and Seaboard Air Line were like in steam days and then watch the transition to diesel. The road by road individuality of steam power is replaced by the sameness of stock diesel power right out of the builder's catalog. Here, a certain unifying process was initiated which today sees some of these earliest units working together in unity in their common grey livery. Why grey? It is a very old tradition in the south.
A look at the steam of these several roads shows a road by road uniqueness tailored to fit axle loadings and grades and the like. Then there is a bit of styling flair to top things off that forever makes, for example, a NC&StL "yellow jacket" 4-8-4 unmistakable.
