INTRODUCTION
This is a book which attempts to live up to its title - at least so far as Kansas City Southern - Louisiana & Arkansas railway steam locomotives and their trains could be photographed from 1931 to 1952. From that point of view no better railway system than this could have been selected as a subject. Locomotives of the Kansas City Southern, Louisiana & Arkansas, or Louisiana Railway & Navigation Company and its Texas lines were each in themselves amply distinctive and interesting. Consolidated in the late 1930's and pre-Diesel 1940's they were by all odds the most interesting and diversified assortment of steam locomotives possessed by any 1,600-mile, or much longer, railway system in the United States.
In preparing this book, the locomotives are presented not only in terms of what they looked like but also of what they could do. Information as to weight, tractive effort, and so forth appears in an appendix in the back of the book. However, the photographs of those same engines handling a long freight or fast passenger train are the proof of the pudding. By performance as well as appearance these were some of the best locomotives of their types ever built. For this reason the more than twenty years spent taking the pictures and gathering the information was a pleasure rather than a task.
However, were it not for the many agreeable associations with railroaders from engine wipers to division superintendents most of the pictures would be unphotographed and uncaptioned. In many respects the book may be considered as produced by railroaders about their railroad - the writer-photographer being merely an agency of bringing them together under one cover.
