In the January, 1915, issue of The Railway Magazine the first of the late E. L. Ahrons' articles on "Locomotive and Train Working in the Latter Part ofthe Nineteenth Century" made its appearance. During the next twelve years every railway of importance in the British Isles was covered by this entertaining historian, who happily combined in himself enthusiasm, diligence in research and sound engineering training. Long considered one of the finest things ever published in TheRailway Magazine, this series has become a classic of railway literature.
The issues in which the articles appeared have long been out of print. The sheer quantity of the material has made it impossible to reprint all the articles between two covers. It is therefore designed to reprint the whole work in a number of volumes, grouping them, as far as is convenient, under the regional system.
This first volume will, it is hoped, be followed by five further volumes, forming a permanent record of an important period in the development of the steam locomotive.
