Locomotive Rosters of North America 2nd Edition 1973 June 30 Locomotive Fleet Statistics Diesel locomotives owned and in operation as of June 30 1973 48 Pages by James Kerr
Acknowledgements of appreciation are extended to the respective railways whose co-operation made this publication a reality.
The first publication to exclusively offer massive, accurate and yet current diesel locomotive rosters of North American railways, reflecting operating units owned together with new locomotives on order, it is accurate at June 30, 1973. It represents the major railway systems, including subsidiaries, together with prominent short lines of the United States of America, Canada and Mexico, with few exceptions, principally due to lateness of information received for publication deadlines.
For easy reference, there are two main sections both arranged alphabetically. The first half of the publication concentrates on the major systems (fleets in excess of 400 units), while the second half features the prominent short lines (fleets owning or having on order at least 10 units but less than 400 units).
Special attention was directed to roster layout standardization for easy comparisons. This was achieved by listing locomotives in sequence by the current prominent builders, followed by other builders, with horsepower ratings.
EMD (Electro-Motive Division of General Motors Corporation) GMD (General Motors Diesel Limited)
GE (General Electric Company)
MLW (MLW- Montreal Locomotive Works)
ALCO (Alco Products Inc., American Locomotive Company) FM (Fairbanks - Morse)
CLC (Canadian Locomotive Company Limited)
BAL/BLH or BLW (Baldwin and related companies)
WHIT (Whitcomb)
The standardized roster layout features horsepower ranges in descending sequence by builder from the most powerfully rated to the least powerfully rated units. Those locomotive models significantly modified from the original builders models have the modification feature indicated after the model by the suffix M.
Due to the demand for early publication, and to reduce delays accordingly, it was decided to omit railway current road numbers for the respective units. We expect to include railway current road numbers in our next major revision in the near future. If interest warrants, we also plan to include short lines with less than 10 units and small industrial railways, as well as electric locomotives owned, in operation and on order.
