When one conjures up an image in one's mind of the North Island Main Trunk Railway, there is perhaps one locomotive type that instinctively becomes part of that image. For the general public and railwaymen alike, the Trunk means one thing: the haunt of the Ka.
These mighty steam locomotives, and the K class that preceded them, were masters of the Trunk for less than half of the 77 years the NIMT has been in existence. Yet with their massive proportions and the aura of pent-up power emanating from their rumbling interiors, and the thunderous roar when their all-out assault on a mountain grade was under way, they struck such awe into anyone fortunate enough to either stand lineside and witness the spectacle, or travel behind them in a passenger train that they are not easily forgotten. As often as not, a trip behind a Ka was to thunder through the sleeping countryside in the dead of night in an overnight express, as the cool blue light from a full moon backlit a trail of steam passing by the window. This is the memory of the Ka on the Trunk that many of us reflect on, and perhaps consider the NIMT a poorer place for their passing into history.
This booklet is not only a brief history in pictures of the first-built Ka, No 945, but a tribute to all the mighty Kas, which except for 945, 935, and 942, all saved by preservationists, have long since gone to the scrapyard.
