Locomotive Quarterly's first year is now history and this, its second Fall issue, marks a turning point. Until now, we have appreciated the encouragement of reader mail so heavy that, to our profound embarrassment, we have been unable to cope with it.
The real proof of the pudding for a periodical, however, is in its subscription renewals. The rapid response of our charter subscribers has been astounding. We start Year Two with the LQ family happily intact and growing.
A recent review of our circulation presented a puzzle: Why have several readers taken dual subscriptions? A few queries revealed that a number have set up individual road albums or other files and seek to separately store material from the front and back of each sheet. Others have taken second copies to pull the color plates for framing. Fortunately, LQ carries no advertising-it would be difficult indeed to explain this circumstance to an ad agency's auditor.
Like any new publication, LQ has burned its fingers a few times and will surely do so again. We feel-and reader response seems to agree-that our basic aims are sound and our direction of development is clearly charted. With continued readership growth, we look forward confidently to offering you more and better material about our complex, intriguing subject-the steam locomotive.
