Locomotive on the Railroads Battlefield, The by Dickerman 1931
The Locomotive on the Railroads Battlefield by William Dickerman (President American Locomotive Company) 1931 An address before Princeton University in the Cyrus Fogg Brackett Lectureship in Applied Engineering and Technology delivered on April 14, 1931.
DURING the past decade the armies of the new forms of transportation have made perceptible advances into the territory of the railroads on their battlefield. These gains are worthy of careful consideration, although there is no fear regarding the final outcome. How long will it be before the last engagement will take place and what will be the terms of the armistice'?
Mr. Dickerman has pointed out the position occupied by one arm of the railroad service, the locomotive, and the manner in which it is retaking certain positions and how it may finally defeat the enemy. Responsibility, reliability, rapidity of transport and reduced costs are the factors of success in this conflict, and these the railroads possess in their improved arms of service, of which the locomotive is one of the most important.
Princeton University is indeed fortunate to have presented to its men these clear pictures of the wonderful advances made in American railroading on its battlefield during the past decade against adverse conditions. Its faculty and student body appreciate these data so ably presented by Mr. Dickerman. On these data studies in engineering and economics may be made in classroom and in research.
