Social forces such as wars and the Great Depression, had a marked effect on the development of fuel and water facilities on the C&NW and the
CStPM&O railroads, and similarly on other American railroads.
Employees of other railroads surely could recognize their own experiences in the stories of how employees of these two railroads handled the difficulties encountered in the fueling and watering of locomotives. Although this book is centered on the C&NW and CStPM&O, the local history recorded here may be useful for understanding American railroad history in general.
In each era, from steam locomotives through gas-electric motor cars to diesel engines, the technical and structural developments of these servicing facilities have been framed in the context of the social and economic forces which markedly affected their development. In addition, wherever possible, this book reports the experience of the people who worked with these facilities. Although the structures described here, once dominating the landscape, have disappeared almost completely today, these memories of the employees who worked with them may contribute to wider respect for those who toil today.
