Introduction
The Great Western Railway attracts far more affection and devotion than any of the other three post-grouping railway companies. We all have our favourites in any sphere and the railway enthusiast has his favourite company as well as his favourite class of locomotive, but why do so many choose the Great Western? Analysts have attempted to define the reason but with little success. Many present-day devotees will hardly have known the Great Western as an independent company and the majority will never have experienced the railway during its last normal operating period, prior to 1939. Nostalgia plays an important part, as does the delight of childhood memory, no matter how illusory. Without doubt a major factor in deciding a preference is visual attraction. Steam locomotives and rolling stock provide visual impact and colour the enthusiast's feelings for a railway, but beauty is still in the eye of the beholder.
