INTRODUCTION
For an eastern railroad firmly established in the coal-hauling tradition, depending throughout the bulk of its existence on black diamonds for both revenues and fuel, the Reading was quick to begin the turn to diesel power when it became available.
Always looking to the future with a progressive eye, Reading Company engineers seemed to avoid the conservative stance taken by some rival railroads with their aging "iron horses" and instead of standing firm with steam or developing several classes of "super power" steam, the Reading Company wasted little time in entering the diesel market.
From the acquisition of the first diesel unit in 1926 to the end of the Reading Company as a Class One carrier on March 31, 1976 - a 50-year span - the railroad operated new or rebuilt diesels assigned to 50 different Reading Company classes, representing all of the major diesel builders in the United States, and including some of the most popular and least popular models developed to date.
This book reproduces the diagrams from official Reading Company records, for the first time collecting drawings of all 50 classes of Reading diesels into one cover.
Only the last few diesels acquired did not receive special drawings from the Reading's mechanical department, with catalog drawings used for reference in the final bankrupt years. To insure a complete record, tracings of those drawings have also been included.
The information on these pages is self-explanatory. Nothing has been changed in order to guarantee historical credibility.
For the railfan, modeler, or railroad historian, this collection should provide a valuable reference and insight into the motive power needs of the Reading Company.
