The locomotives and carriages of the London and North Western Railway have been the subjects of publications by other authors, locomotives most recently by Ted Talbot and carriages by David Jenkinson, Phillip A. Millard and Richard M. Casserley. Lineside items have been covered by Richard Foster (signals) and by inclusion in regional histories by various others.
There has long been a gap in the published material in that LNWR wagons have received very little attention. This publication attempts to rectify that by studying LNWR wagons from the earliest railways until the 1923 grouping. No attempt has been made to cover either North London Railway or Dundalk, Newry and Greenore Railway wagons, but those from other absorbed lines have been included in the relevant chapters where information is available.
No attempt has been made to cover post-I923 liveries, renumbering or scrapping dates although LMS and later photographs are included, and some later constructional changes are mentioned to aid reference back to the LNWR design.
The chapters in this volume were written and illustrated by Peter Davis, Peter Ellis, John Shelley, Bob Williams and Mike Williams; additional drawings were done by Tim Hughes. The late Jim Richards' knowledge of pre-group days from first-hand observation complemented official sources. Many of his photographs and drawings have been gratefully used as reference material. Assistance was also received from Richard Foster, Gordon Reid, Don Rowland, the late Dudley Whitworth, Philip Millard, the late Geoff Williams, Newton Reference Library and the St. Helens Reference Library. Bob Essery made his photograph and drawing collection available to the authors. Finally, Chris Northedge acted as Editor to draw together and publish the material, and added sections on liveries and slate wagons.
Official reference material is available for inspection from: the Public Records Office, Kew - building records; the National Railway Museum, York - photographs, both official and from their collections; and the Historical Model Railway Society - copies of official drawings.
The LNWR Society was instrumental both in bringing the authors together and in providing collections of drawings and photographs which proved invaluable.
