CUSTOMER REVIEW
I'm typing this review as a nod to vintage children's books, the types that used real photos of children - or perhaps child models. This one was created in 1937 and the full title is "The Little Girl who Waved: The Story of Curly Top".
The book is a period piece, awash in vintage nostalgia, not all of it soft and gentle. It is a Depression era children's book, you see, and reflects the very real reality of scarce money, so scarce that this family can only wave at the trains going by. They can't afford to ride them.
Curly Top's real name is Violet Kathleen but her actual name is only briefly mentioned and she is called by her nickname for most of the book. She waves excitedly to a particular train that comes by every day. Oh, how she wishes she could ride on that train, the Twentieth Century, her very favorite, the one that goes by her house.
Three years go by before "Curly Top" has a chance to ride on the train. By then, she has been adopted by the railroad men and is known as the "sweetheart of the Twentieth Century". Stories appear about her in the newspapers. And, of course she gets a chance to ride on HER train.
I wish I could convey the charm of the vintage photos in this one as well as the author's style as she writes about Curly Top's travels from Chicago to New York. She has quite a series of adventures as she shops and meets people. The book is as much a promotion of rail travel as anything but the story isn't lost, either.
The ringlets in Curly Top's hair are clear signs of the fashion of the time, (curly hair was all the rage) as is the old-fashioned dress she wears. Those who yearn to see photos of old trains won't be disappointed, either. A New York Central System train is shown, inside and out (interior and exterior shots) There is even a brief connection between Curly Top and Myrna Loy.
