DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION:
The name Lionel has long been synonymous with the toy train. Since the turn of the century, these trains have appeared during the Holiday Season to delight boys, both young and old. In the past two decades, as with many items that have been manufactured over a long period, the toy train has become very collectible. This book is designed as a reference work on Lionel Trains from their first appearance until World War Il halted production in 1943. Although the subject material is covered in depth and detail for the serious collector, the more than 700 color photographs of trains from Lionel's most colorful era will appeal to all. This book has been three years in the preparation, with two years in the research alone; every effort has been made to make this the most accurate and comprehensive book ever written about Lionel trains.
The Train Collectors Association is a non-profit corporation founded in 1954 at Yardley, Pennsylvania and incorporated in Pittsburgh in 1957.
The purpose of the Association is to bring together persons interested in collecting and operating "Tinplate" trains. The term "Tinplate" when used to describe toy trains, means mass produced toy model trains, as opposed to hand built and kit models. The term is derived from the use of this material for the first toy trains produced in the 1850-60 period. Through the promotion of fellowship among persons interested in collecting and operating tinplate trains, the Association has established for collecting and provided its members and the public with information on the history of and the preservation of these items of historical interest.
From an initial founding membership of 68, the Association has grown to national proportion with 15 geographical divisions and 18 chapters in the larger urban areas.
In 1972 the members of the Train Collectors Association in the Pittsburgh area hosted the Association's National Convention. These members subsequently formed the Fort Pitt of the Eastern Division of the T.C.A. One of the first committees organized within the Chapter was the Historical Committee, whose members are the authors of this book.
