Lionel Trains Market Price Guide By John Townsley Postwar edition Spiral bound 1976
The purpose of this guide is to provide the serious collector or dealer with a reliable reference listing of Lionel trains and their retail values. It will help the collector assess the value of his collection and give him an accurate idea of what these items are retailing for today.
The values listed in this guide are realistic dealer's prices for every significant item produced by Lionel during the postwar period, 1946-1969. Dealers purchasing items for resale usually pay 40% to 60% of the retail price depending upon their needs.
These retail values have been computed and averaged out from thousands of price lists from hundreds of dealers throughout the United States. Each item has four different values listed based on condition ranging from FAIR to MINT.
The condition of an item plays a great part in assessing its value. Some collectors will not accept anything less than LIKE NEW or MINT condition, but most will draw the line at VERY GOOD or EXCELLENT. The new collector will find it tough to grade trains accurately at first. Experience is the best teacher, and as he goes along, he will soon develop an eye for assessing minor and major defects at a glance.
