Introduction:
The 90 regular cabooses and 21 wrecker cabooses listed in this, our second special checklist, more than justify devoting a separate checklist just to cabooses.
And the 45 photos of regular cabooses and 15 photos of wrecker cabooses should be welcomed by collectors as a visual record of some of the many cabooses Lionel has produced from 1945 to date.
We have listed all the major and minor varieties of both types of cabooses that are known to us. If you have any varieties that we have missed please let us know so that future editions of this checklist can be updated.
We have not listed any truck or wheel varieties on the regular cabooses simply because it is so easy to switch the bodies and chassis to produce any desired truck or wheel variety. That is not to say that such variations are not collectible, but the current pricing guide on both types of cabooses is based solely on body variations.
We have, however, noted those cabooses which are illuminated. We feel this added notation will be helpful to both operators and collectors.
The current pricing guide included in this checklist shows prices for items in Good, Excellent and Mint condition.
An item in Good condition is an item that has been run or used on a layout, and may have some minor defects such as chips and scratches.
An item in Excellent condition would be pretty well intact and free of scratches, chips, etc., but may have been run or used on a layout.
An item in Mint condition has never been run or used on a layout, and is new as received from the factory.
All pictures are of the actual item. If this is a railroad item, this material is obsolete and no longer in use by the railroad. Please email with questions.
