I first became acquainted with the Ontario government railway in 1958 at Christmas time. My fiancwas taking the young teacher home to meet the family. We rode the night train from North Bay to Swastika and held hands as is common with the affection that only the prospect of marriage within two months can bring. When we left the train at Swastika, the Conductor's parting words echoed for a long time afterwards. "Have a nice holiday with your sister." I knew then that this had to be a somewhat special railway.
During the past eighteen years I have lived along the line at Moose Factory, Cochrane and Kirkland Lake. Work on northern books has provided a familiarity with the presence of the railway. The T. & N.O. played a major role in the settlement of the towns and cities in this huge section of Ontario.
The study of the history of this highly successful regional railway confirmed me as a ferrequinophile, a lover of the iron horse. The steam locomotive may have had a working life of thirty-five to forty years and an average of twenty-five thousand parts but statistics pale at the sight of the real thing even now at rest at North Bay, Englehart and Cochrane. No wonder the prospect of steam has thrilled people for several generations. The old nickname 'Time No Object' as a play on the T. & N.O. is accepted as a term of affection and the more one learns about this railway, the more fascinating story of endeavour and enterprise is revealed.
This is the story of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway from its initial construction in 1902 until the name change in 1946. Certain portions of the account are writ large while others are compressed, just as events in our lives are relived when we reflect on the past. No study of a railway such as this can be more than a series of snapshots in time. The O.N.R. still follows the tradition set by its predecessor. The railway continues to be a Link with a Lonely Land.
